How important is for all family members to be in the interview for approval?

We are hoping to adopt a puppy from a rescue. Unfortunately, my father can not do that because it does not work. The rescue calls for all family members attending the interview. Is this a negative effect about our potential for adoption? All the family has consented to the adoption of a dog, and everyone else is able to attend. Unfortunately, the interview process takes place in an event where many people are capable of being interrogated at a time, so that reprogramming is not possible.

No, because they understand that rescues people lead a life outside of their dogs. I had a lot of people the whole family could not attend due to work and I have never penalized any way, the time to explain the situation will understand. What a strange way to conduct one more interview, made in house, where the family is comfortable. It is difficult to get an idea the personality of someone in public in a disturbed area. Good luck to your family!

Question on adoption home study and animals?

My husband and I are considering adopting from Russia. We already have a child comes naturally to us, but we would take our son to come. My question concerns the home-study/inspection process. We live in So.Cal. on a large piece property and we have many animals, including many dogs, cats, horses, chickens, sheep, you get the picture. Will this cause me a problem?

You need to know what the Russian workers believe some animals. Most countries think that's great. Sometimes I know that China has anything against cats as pets. I do not think however, that Russia has a problem with anything whatsoever. Ask your international player. I grew up on a farm and my adoptive parents in Brazil, Cambodia, Korea, Peru and never had problems with farm life and animals.

Q 203. How do I prepare my home study?

American Adoption

Adopting a baby is a state regulated legal process. It can be accomplished through intermediaries who could either be public or private licensed adoption agencies, or attorneys. If you opt for a lawyer, you must choose one with great care. Your attorney could either be a part of a private firm or could be practicing individually, on the basis of a contingent fee. Other lawyers can include those employed by the government. Accordingly, they might work at the country, the state or at the federal level.

The lawyer should be chosen on the basis of some pragmatic considerations. If you choose to adopt a child independently, it is imminent to have a good adoption attorney. You can get lawyers recommended by your relatives, friends, or by some organization like an adoptive parent support group. The lawyer must make himself available to the parents and answer their queries satisfactorily. It is important that he considers both sets of parents, that is, birth parents and adoptive parents to be involved in the process. This bodes well for relationships between them, especially in relation to any future considerations.

A private attorney is an expensive venture. The fee too varies from person to person. While some charge a flat fee, others could charge on an hourly basis. It is essential to determine the lawyer’s knowledge and competence in the field. It’s a good idea to consider the number of non-relative adoptions he might have handled. In case of an independent adoption, if the parents live in different states, it is important that the lawyer be conversant with the inter-state compact on the placement of children. If the advocate is a member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys, it points to his experience, which is of extreme importance. Membership to this association is granted only to those who meet high standards of competence and professionalism.

Statutory law might or might not require disclosure of identification while information is exchanged between the parents. It does, however, work to one’s advantage to interact with each other, with the advice of the attorney. Adopting a child through a lawyer instead of an agency can work against the parents, as it can lead to a possible legal loss of adoption assistance benefits provided for the child by the state.

International Adoption Information

international adoption information
We are thinking about international adoption, does anyone have any advice or more information?

We have done some research on the internet for international adoption but I am looking for some advice from someone that has already done this. I know I should just adopt from the US but I heard it is more difficult because everyone wants a “baby” and we would rather help a child from another country. Any ideas will help. Thanks

As an IA parent, my advice is to do a LOT of research. Informed Adoption Advocates, as already suggested, is a great site.

I’m not sure from your question, if you have the expectation of adopting a baby. There are very few infants available for adoption. Most children available for adoption are school age, including sibling groups. Just like in the US, older children are often passed over in favor of younger children.

We adopted two older children (5 and 10 at the time) from overseas. We have had some adjustment issues, everything that I would consider to be normal and expected. But nothing like lighting the house on fire or killing the cat. I’m sure that does happen RARELY, because some severely damaged children in the US have similar stories, but it’s the exception, rather than the rule. Somehow, it’s become “common knowledge” that all older IA adoptees are violent and severely disturbed… probably because it makes for a better 20/20 story than older IA adoptees that make a relatively smooth transition.

Anyway, I could write books about what I’ve learned since becoming an IA parent and we did a LOT of research and preparation befrorehand. (Yes, we have close family friends that are adult IA adoptees. In fact it was one of them that suggested we look at international adoption in the first place).

Kristy, I had to laugh when I read your response. Yes, the reception we continually get is enough to make me question why I even bother posting here anymore. But a question asking for information about IA is a great way to get us to come out of the woodwork.

Let the TD’s begin!
